The Aztecs started as a small country. Then they started to fight and win other states so there population began to grow. The Aztecs lived in a valley in mexico.  This valley is surrounded by mountains which made the water come from the mountain rivers gathering into a lake. The altitude of the Aztecs was high which made the temperatures cold. This made it difficult to crop because they would easily die.
